Transactional Email
Developer-friendly email APIs. Browse the 8 parent tools below — each has a dedicated page with up to 10 indie or bootstrapped alternatives, plus pricing, founders, and where applicable, open-source flags.
Transactional email is plumbing — until it breaks. The big providers (SendGrid, Mailgun, AWS SES) work, but pricing scales unevenly and the developer experience hasn't aged well. The indie crop — Resend, Postmark, Loops — has rewired the API surface around what teams actually need: idempotency, React templates, and replies that thread back to a webhook.
What to look for
- Dedicated IP at a reasonable price (not buried five tiers up)
- First-party DKIM/SPF/DMARC setup wizards, not a 12-step doc
- Templates you can edit without redeploying
- An audit log of every send, with the rendered HTML you can replay
Common gotchas
- Free tiers that throttle hard the first time you hit a list
- Per-recipient billing that surprises you on a fan-out email
- Sandbox modes that silently swallow sends in production
Editor's pick
Resend is the obvious modern pick if you're a Next.js shop. Postmark is still the deliverability gold standard for receipts and password resets. Loops is doing interesting work blending marketing + transactional in one UI.
